LIVESTOCK MONTHLY PICK: THE DORIAN by KEEP
SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

Each month we bring you our favorite pair of shoes that's on the wall at Livestock in Vancouver Canada. This month we bring you the Dorian from Keep in black. Here's what our ladies-product-reviewer/writer-person, K Cubitt, has to say about em:

Ok, let's face it...summer's over and fall has arrived. Maybe some of you are still living in a land of sunshine, but eventually it will hit you and you just can't deny it. Don't be sad though. Summer will come again. In the meantime, let's make the best of the season. It's time to switch up your wardrobe in favor of cozier things. That means you can wear your favorite sweater again! And who doesn't love a good scarf? A new season also calls for new shoes. And what better shoes than Keep?! It just so happens that Keep has put out a couple new styles that are just perfect for fall. This rings especially true if you live in a rainy city. The "Dorian" (pictured above), and the "Tatum" are both water resistant. These shoes are about to put your gumboots out of commission. And good news for the men (who were probably too cool to ever wear gumboots when things got soggy), the, "Dorian" runs all the way up to a women's size 13! I believe that's about an 11.5 men's. So plenty of you dudes can now slip your feet into a pair of Keeps as well.

TODD FRANCIS
SEPTEMBER 16, 2008

Click HERE for a look at the feature we did on Todd Francis' favorite boards he's designed, then if you're in SF head down to this show and have a look at some of the originals in real life along with some new stuff as well. Here's the press release...

3131 Gallery is proud to announce our latest exhibition, a 15 year retrospective of Mr. Todd Francis' graphic artwork for Real, Stereo, Anti-Hero, New Deal and Element Skateboards along with a new series of paintings.
The opening reception on Friday, September 26th, 2008 7-11PM will present a selection of graphics spanning his career thus far from his current tenure at Element to his earlier years at Deluxe Distribution (home to Real, Anti-Hero and former home of Stereo) during the mid to late '90s. Over the years he created some of the classic images of those brands, helping them become staples in the skateboard industry.

During the pre-computer days in skate graphics the majority were hand drawn at 100% scale. Since only one was needed no multiples were made, making each of the illustrations in the show all the more unique. Original pieces will be shown alongside selected skate decks on the gallery walls.

Todd is responsible for some of this industries most recognized and influential art; he'll just never admit it. I can honestly say that in over twenty years of working with great artists, I've never encountered an illustrator with as much raw talent and versatility as Todd, he's the real deal. - Johnny Schillereff, Founder and President of Element.

Music performance by Tommy Guerrero and friends with food catered by the Tee-Off Bar and Grill and beverages by Lagunitas Ale. For more information please visit 3131 Gallery / equaldist.com or contact info@equaldist.com.

Sponsored by Anti-Hero, Element, Real, SLAP Magazine, Stereo, Lagunitas Ale and Tee-Off Bar & Grill

THIS IS EDWARD CLOVER
AUGUST 28, 2008

It seems like a lot of what could be super interesting collaborations these days are just thrown out into the marketplace with somebody's name stamped on them, like "Legendary Dude X does a signature t-shirt for Brand Name Z", without any sort of story backing it up. Most of the people who are expected to buy the stuff have never heard of Legendary Dude X so it ends up almost being a wasted endaevor, even though it might sell a shit ton of units due to the brand name and people just trusting that Legendary Dude X is to be trusted because he's working with Brand Name Z, I like to see colabs happen where you learn about the people involved.

I'm not sure if Freshjive is releasing any sort of clothing to go along with Edward Clover's exhibit tomorrow at Reserve but they produced this little video clip to offer some insight on who the dude is and what he's done. I'd love to see more stuff like this in the future.

THE "MAKE SOMETHING!!" WORKSHOPS CONTINUE
AUGUST 20, 2008

Working with public school art programs and youth mentoring programs, MAKE SOMETHING!! workshops invite local youth to
experience creative learning in a non-traditional setting. Workshops focus on subjects such as painting, sculpture, photography, tattoos, music, animation, zines and assorted other subjects that relate to DIY culture. The walls of each "classroom" display many of the works created on-site, and will hence become an ever-evolving gallery of young ideas in artistic practice.

They're working with public schools and local youth mentoring programs, doing art classes in NY, LA and SF (30 classes total). The teachers are all artists associated with the Beautiful Losers film (or surrounding posse). They started a few weeks ago in NY and SF (LA starts this weekend), below is a schedule for the remaining workshops. The actual classes aren't open to the public, but all the work made is on display in the spaces and is definitely worth a check if you're around...

THE KARATE FUCKING KID!
AUGUST 19, 2008

When I received a press release this morning that said "The Tony Hawk Foundation brought its signature Stand Up For Skateparks fundraiser to The Hamptons..." I was like "What the fuck do The Hamptons have to do with skateboarding?", then I read a little further to the part where it said "...raising $575,000 to help develop public skateparks across America, including $50,000 for the Manhattan Bridge Skatepark in New York City." and I was like "Right. My bad."; if it brings out Ralph Macchio and it raises a shit ton of money to build skateparks then you really can't hate on it. You should maybe actually be kinda stoked on it.
