WORDS: STAFFERS
In this monthly feature we bring you images, info and opinions on some
products that you can find in stores right now. Unless we think that
something's really fucking stupid and we feel like we really have to
tell you about how stupid it is, nothing that appears here will ever
get a bad review. In short: this is the best stuff.
Delphi
collection by Element
Nestled into a
comfy bungalow in an undisclosed San Francisco neighborhood lives a
talented young man by the name of Matt Irving. Matt runs an artist
collective called Delphi and handles the art direction for the Adidas
Skateboarding stuff that you've been seeing lately. He used to be the
art director of Stereo Skateboards and he spent years working for
Element. No longer with them, this collection is kinda like a goodbye
wave between Matt and them, and a great addition to their growing list
of artist collaborations.

MONTHLY PICK:
Air Max 1 Premium by Nike
Every month from now
on we'll be bringing you our favorite thing - a pair of shoes, a
jacket, a t-shirt, whatever - that's for sale at Canada's finest
sneaker store, Livestock. Kinda like those game shows in the 80's where
the contestants were given a shopping cart at a department store and 20
seconds on the clock to pile as much shit into their cart as they
possibly could, only we take a month to choose one thing and they don't
sell dishware or Betamax machines or Atari 2600's at this store. So
it's kinda not at all like the shopping cart thing. Anyway, here's what
we're feeling this month.
Engaging in
simplified, imaginative, thoughtful, more-than-effective graphic design
which he descibes as "logified", Geoff Mcfetridge is on our top 5
designers... no... top 5 artists list. Pictured left are a
couple of our favorite t-shirts, his Creature Off My Back collection of
plastic figurines and a fancy cashmere sweater, all produced by 2K.

Etnies Seed Project
You've noticed the
tidal wave of environmentally friendly programs that almost every
single company has embedded into their agendas lately, right? From shoe
companies to, well, every kind of company, it's a positive global trend
that we really, really, really hope sticks around and becomes
incorporated into the core of all corps. We're no tree hugging
environmentalists over here but we like the idea of civilization and
humanity as we know it becoming sustainable so it, and we, will still
be around in a few decades. The companies who are presently eco
friendly, carbon neutral or whatever you want to call it and who
ultimately end up staying that way after the roar of the earth friendly
tsunami can no longer be heard will get a big thumbs up and the ones
who don't will get a poopy thumbs down. For now, Etnies gets a hip hip
hooray thumbs up for their Seed Project, of which this shoe is a part
of.
C Howard's
Violets
Do you like
candy? Do you like soap? Do you like candy that kinda tastes like soap
but in a good way? You're gonna love these, dude.
Classic by Nike
SB
About 20 times less
wild and 5 times less fuzzy than the 3 Bears inspired Dunks that came
out 6 months ago, these wooly, Oscar the Grouch-esque Classics might
add up to a good addition to your collection of shoes that are made out
of imaginary animal materials.
One-off cup by Yosoh
"I've got a
brilliant idea! I'll design some cool graphics and apply them to
t-shirts and sell them to cool kids!"...
... was not what Scott Rench was thinking when he decided to start a
little company called Yosoh. First off, the dude owns a kiln. Second,
he makes blocks of clay and ceramics that he applies his artwork to in
some sort of fashion that only people with kilns know how to do. The
cup you see to the left is a more accesible version of his larger works
but is still one of a kind, and it only costs $12. Awesome.
Situationormal
hiker by DC Shoe Co
I lost track of
Situationormal a while back so I went to their web site to see what
they're up to and it looks like the last time they updated was in the
summer of 2004. I figure the only logical explanation can be that they
got their hands on the first prototypes of their DC collaboration
hiking boots way back when and they headed to the woods to see if
they're as waterproof and durable as they say they are. It must have
been so nice out there that they decided to stay.
John Cardiel
Seditionist figurine by Freshjive and Medicom
Last month we
showed you the classic Mike York Freshjive Seditionist doll, the gnarly
realistic one with working ziptie handcuffs and little shotgun shells
and all the bells and whistles. Not sure if this Cardiel Kubrick was
released by Freshjive before or after the York one (they both came out
some time in 2003) but even if it's not quite as tech as its brother
from a different mother it's just as stoking largely due to the fine
details, especially that little hockey mask helmet thing and come on,
dude, it's Cards!

574's by New Balance
A few years back I
was in this shoe store in LA - one of those discount joints where none
of the shoes have boxes and if you're lucky they might have at least
close to your size in an okay pair - and I came across an amazing pair
of black and grey New Balances for $15. I can't remember what model
number they were but they were super comfy, like a cross between those
ugly ones that they make for middle-aged people who run in the morning
and the 574's that you see to the left here, and they really shouldn't
have been there. And they really shouldn't have been $15 either. A
couple of summers ago I brought them on a road trip and they went
missing out of my hotel room in Seattle. So if you live in the Pacific
Northwest, or you're visiting the Pacific Northwest, and you see a
cleaning lady wearing dope New Balances please give me a call because
I'm still pissed that they're gone.
Vega women's
watches by Nixon
If you had three
super thick ponytails you could use these colorful, stretchy-band
watches as hair ties. You probably don't though... you probably don't
even have one small pony tail. That's cool though. Whatever.
Air Max Light
by Nike and Size? UK
When they answer
the phone at Size? in London do you think they say "Size?" as
a question or... well... as an answer? This re-issued Air Max Light
that was originally produced in the 80's was brought back specifically
for them and it comes in three colorways right now so why don't you
call them up and see what the answer is? Or the question.
Woven patch by S Britt
S Britt is an
independent artist who creates imagery reminiscent of classic
children's books. We think that his work is really good so we decided
to to tell others about him. That's all.
Geoff Rowley jeans by Volcom
I was just thinking
about how interesting it is that there's pro model denim. Like is there
any sport aside from skateboarding that has professionals endorsing a
specific pair of jeans? Who started that? Hm. Anyway...
You know when you get a new pair of black jeans and two months later
you realize that you've been wearing them every single day and that
they fucking reek because they're black and you just kinda forget to
wash them because you don't really notice that they're dirty? Those
jeans that you wish you had more than one pair of? These are those
jeans.
GEOFF'S PART FROM FLIP'S 'SORRY' VIDEO
Books by Kurt Vonnegut Jr
Did you see that
episode of Letterman a few months back when he had Kurt Vonnegut on as
a guest and the dude talked about politics and he said some funny stuff
but it all seemed really scripted, as if he had written his interview
out and memorized it before he went on the show? If you didn't, the
only way I can describe it is to get you to imagine that I was talking
to you right now instead of you reading these words. It would sound
really weird and it'd be trippy and, for the most part, really
uncomfortable for the both of us.
Unlike his late night talk show appearances, the books of Kurt Vonnegut
will forever be remembered as some of the very best in many a reader's
collection. If you haven't read any of them you should go to the used
bookstore and pick some up, if not to tickle your brain, simply so that
you can put them on your bookshelf and impress people when they come
over to your house. You can talk about how you wished you would have
met him and you can lie about how you read all of his books in college
and about how you're bummed that you'll never read anything new from
him again and then when they ask you what your favorite thing that he
wrote is you can just pretend you're too choked up about his recent
death to talk about it.
Audio books by
David Sedaris
Now that The Best
Living Author Of Our Time has passed away (see above), it's time to
crown a new champion of the literary world, and we're nominating David
Sedaris. Now living in a small town in France, he got his start reading
his short stories (that were largely based around growing up in a
dysfunctional family and about being a weird gay dude in America) on
National Public Radio and the only thing better than reading his books
is listening to him read them to you like he does on these audio books
released by Hatchette. Much like Vonnegut, he had an awkward appearance
on Letterman but don't let that put you off. Have a read or a listen
and then vote Sedaris for The New Best Living Author Of Our Time.

you know that Sylvester Stallone wrote all 5 of the original Rocky
